Attic Ventilation

Problems with attic moisture may contribute to mold, mildew, or other biological growth. By allowing moisture to become stuck in the attic, the absence of proper attic ventilation promotes attic mold formation. Moldy attic conditions may lead to rot, structural damage, and — for those susceptible — many health issues.

Attic condensation often turns into frost in the winter, which does not actually pose any threat. However, it converts back into condensation when the frost melts, which makes everything that it touches wet — usually insulation and wood. Wood frames, rafters, roof sheathing, and attic insulation are then also susceptible to mold and rot, which can cause bigger problems, such as a roof leak.

Attic condensation generally happens during winter and spring months when warm, moist air from the main living area rises into the attic space. When that warm, moist air meets the chilly underside of your roof’s deck, condensation occurs.
