Direct-Over-Deck:
A New Metal Roof Over Your Old One

How do we update roofs in Nova Scotia without spending extra on wood? We install a new metal roof straight over your old one — with the premium Finnish VANKKA Classic system.
Re-roofing usually means tearing everything off and building a new wood substructure — extra time, extra cost, extra mess. We do it differently. Thanks to the unique geometry of the VANKKA Classic panel and its Kynar 500® coating, we install your new metal roof using the Direct-Over-Deck method: directly on top of your existing bitumen shingles. No full tear-off, no extra strapping, and no exposed screws to loosen under Atlantic winds. Our most popular choice across Nova Scotia is the metal tile profile, with standing seam available too.
What Is the Direct-Over-Deck Method?
Direct-Over-Deck installs the new metal panels straight onto your existing roof deck, right over the old shingles. The seam geometry of the VANKKA panel carries and locks the sheets without a new wood substructure or strapping — so you save on materials and labour, and get a cleaner, faster job with far less disruption to your home. Use the model below to see how it goes on, and switch between our two profiles.
How We Install It, Step by Step
- Your existing roof stays. We start with your current roof — the old bitumen shingles and the deck stay right where they are. No messy, costly tear-off and nothing sent to landfill.
- New metal, straight over the top. The VANKKA panel is installed directly over the old shingles. Its seam geometry means no extra wood strapping is needed to carry the sheets.
- Locked, sealed and done. Panels lock together with concealed fasteners — no exposed screws to loosen or leak. The result is quiet, sealed, and built to last for decades.
Why We Install It This Way — The Advantages
This is our style of installation, refined for Atlantic homes. Here’s what it means for you:
- Pure savings on materials. No new wood substructure and no extra strapping — you don’t pay for lumber and labour you don’t need.
- No full tear-off, less mess. Your old roof stays in place, so the job is faster, cleaner, and far less disruptive to your household.
- No exposed screws. Concealed fasteners mean nothing to work loose or leak under strong Atlantic winds.
- Maximum protection from salty sea air. Premium Finnish steel with a Kynar 500® coating resists corrosion and holds its colour for decades on the coast.
- A quieter home. The system dampens rain noise instead of amplifying it — silence inside, even in a downpour.
- Protected sooner. A faster install means your home is weather-tight in less time.
Metal Tile & Standing Seam
Metal tile is our most-used profile — the classic tiled look in durable steel, engineered for Atlantic weather, and the finish most Nova Scotia homeowners choose. Standing seam is available too for a cleaner, more modern line. Both use the same premium Finnish steel, the same Kynar 500® coating, and the same concealed-fastener, Direct-Over-Deck installation.
