Warning Signs
When a foundation needs looking at
- Stair-step or horizontal cracks in the basement wall
- A basement that smells damp or takes on water after heavy rain
- Doors and windows upstairs that suddenly stick or will not latch
- Sloping floors, or gaps opening at the baseboard
- A wall that is visibly bowing inward
- Efflorescence — white powder on the concrete
Any one of these on its own may be cosmetic. Two or three together usually means water or movement, and both get more expensive the longer they wait. An inspection costs you nothing.
